Dun, dun, dun…it’s that time of year — yes, the holiday season, but also — Open Enrollment for Health Insurance! It’s that time of year where you have the option to sign up for health insurance and workplace benefits or change your current plan. The process is often quite overwhelming and not as straightforward as other enrollments. We know there is a ton of information to take in and we’re here to make sure you understand the ins and outs before it begins. Are you ready for 2023 Open Enrollment? Let’s take it from the top:
What Is Open Enrollment?
Open enrollment is the time of year — in the fall and winter — when individuals can enroll in a health insurance plan for the next calendar year, or make any necessary changes to their plan. When open enrollment is for you depends on whether you obtain health insurance through an employer or through the Health Insurance Marketplace (ACA).
For 2023 Open Enrollment, most individuals who get individual insurance through the ACA Marketplace will have between November 1st to January 15 to enroll.
Do You Have To Apply For Health Insurance Every Year?
Great question! The answer is no. If you are happy with your current health insurance plan, you do not have to reapply. Our agents will always check in with you as we near open enrollment to make sure you are happy with your current plan and don’t need to make any changes. As long as you keep paying your premiums, your health insurance will stay current.
What Is Special Enrollment?
If you miss the open enrollment period for a list of reasons, there is a Special Enrollment Period available to those who meet qualifying life events. Qualifying life events include:
- Loss of coverage
- Pregnancy/Birth of a Child
- Adopted a Child/Placed a Child In Foster Care
- Marriage / Divorce
- Moving
- Death
