Understand Temporary Medical Coverage

Review the uses, limits, exclusions, and current availability of short-term medical insurance in Florida.

Where temporary coverage can help

A short-term policy may be worth investigating during a transition between jobs or before another coverage start date. It is medically underwritten in many cases and is not ACA-compliant major medical insurance. Do not assume it covers an existing condition, maternity care, prescriptions, preventive services or every emergency expense.

Questions to ask before buying

Request the policy certificate and review its covered benefits, exclusions, waiting periods, provider arrangements, benefit caps, deductible, coinsurance and maximum personal exposure. Ask whether renewals are allowed, what happens at the end of coverage and whether a future Marketplace enrollment opportunity will exist.

Length and rules change

Older agency pages refer to multi-year short-term policies. Federal rules and enforcement policy have changed, and state rules and actual insurer offerings may differ. We do not quote a universal duration or promise a TriTerm option; confirm current Florida terms before choosing temporary coverage.

Compare with comprehensive alternatives

Check whether a loss of job coverage qualifies you for a Marketplace Special Enrollment Period. Also compare COBRA, a spouse's employer coverage and available public programs where applicable. An apparently inexpensive short-term premium should be weighed against the benefits it does not pay.
