Explore Medicare Supplement Coverage

Learn how Florida Medigap coverage differs from Medicare Advantage and what to review before enrolling.

How Medigap fits with Original Medicare

Medigap is a private policy that helps pay certain Original Medicare cost-sharing amounts. Medicare pays its share of covered services first, then the Medigap policy pays according to its lettered benefits. You keep Parts A and B and pay a separate Medigap premium. It cannot be used to pay Medicare Advantage plan cost sharing.

Plans F, G and N at a glance

Plan F covers the Part B deductible but generally cannot be sold to people newly eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020. Plan G does not cover that deductible but does cover Part B excess charges. Plan N also leaves the Part B deductible and excess charges to you, and may charge up to $20 for certain office visits or up to $50 for emergency visits that do not lead to inpatient admission. Compare premium differences against those costs.

What is not included

Most Medigap policies sold today do not include outpatient prescription drug coverage, so review a separate Part D plan. Medigap generally does not cover long-term custodial care, routine dental or vision care, eyeglasses or hearing aids. Some plan letters include limited foreign-travel emergency benefits.

The timing of your application matters

Your federal Medigap open enrollment period generally starts the first month you have Part B and are 65 or older, and lasts six months. During that window an insurer generally cannot use health history to deny you a policy or charge more for it. Outside that period, underwriting may apply unless another guaranteed-issue right exists. Confirm Florida-specific rights before switching.

Compare carriers on the same letter

Benefits for the same standardized Medigap letter are generally the same across insurers, but premiums, rate history and service can differ. Request current quotes and ask how prices may change over time rather than selecting solely on a first-month rate.
