When can you enroll?
HealthCare.gov lists the annual Marketplace Open Enrollment window as November 1 through January 15. Its published guidance says enrollment by December 15 generally starts coverage January 1, and enrollment by January 15 generally starts February 1. Confirm the dates and effective date for the coverage year when you apply.
Special Enrollment Periods outside the annual window
Losing qualifying coverage, moving, marriage and the birth or adoption of a child can trigger a Special Enrollment Period. Many events have a limited application window, often 60 days. A voluntary cancellation or missed premium does not automatically qualify; the Marketplace checks the event and any required documentation.
Savings and plan tiers
Marketplace premium tax credits depend on the applicable rules and your expected household income, size and other eligibility factors. Silver plans may also offer cost-sharing reductions for qualifying households. Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum describe how costs are generally shared—not the quality of doctors—so compare your total costs and networks rather than color alone.
Prepare before applying
Have an estimate of annual household income, household member information, current coverage details, preferred clinicians and a list of medications ready. Update your Marketplace application if income or household circumstances change; otherwise advance tax credits may need reconciliation at tax time.
